Multiple Instant Messenger
I’ve been looking for an instant messenger that can allow me to be logged into several different services at once. I haven’t looked for software like this in a long time because I’ve using Gtalk exclusively for a few years now. Since I’m back on my internet grind, I need to get in touch with my affiliate managers for the adult affiliate programs that I promote. None of them so far use Gtalk. They all have contact info that lists icq. I didn’t know people still used icq.
I’m giving Pidgin a try since it’s the only one I had heard of out of the search results I got from Google after searching for “messenger icq gtalk”.
I’m about to install Pidgin…….
Okay while installing I had options to select or deselect which options and chat clients I wanted to install. I didn’t see gtalk listed. There was also an option to add spell checking support in many different languages. I definitely added that. After it installs and I run it, I’m going to look for gtalk. If I can’t log in to my google talk then Pidgen will be useless to me.
Since I added the spell checker, it did an additional install of Aspell and also downloaded a current database of what I assume are words from the English language. I just realized I don’t remember my old icq usernames and passwords so I’m going to have to do a little icq registration. Of coarse I’ll be putting in mostly junk info, especially my email, because god only knows what kind of spam will come from registering with icq. That’s my assumption at least.
I tried to setup my first account which is my gmail/gtalk. Yes, it was on the list even though I didn’t see it during installation. I entered my info and it wouldn’t connect. The error said “pidgin gtalk disconnected host unknown.” I googled this and landed on this page. Now I’m following those instructions.
Still can’t get a connection. “Server Timed Out.” This is very frustrating.
I googled a bit and found this site which had instructions to help me get gtalk working on pidgin. finally, Gtalk works! Now I’m going to register with icq and add that account. Let’s see if THAT works without a bunch of hassle.
Registering with icq was pain free. I will, however, update you with what kind of spam, if any, I get from icq. Now I’m going to add my icq account info to my pidgin install. Keep your fingers crossed.
Adding my icq account to pidgin went fine. It seems I’m all setup and ready to go. Have a nice day!
